Recapturing Forgotten Spaces
At this December 18, 2012 event in Washington, DC, speakers shared their insights on a wide range of issues related to utilizing all available land to create better places for residents and visitors. Robert Brosnan, Director of Community Planning, Housing and Development for Arlington County, VA; Peter Harnik, Director, Center for City Park Excellence, Trust for Public Land; and Stewart Schwartz, Executive Director of the Coalition for Smarter Growth spoke about transit-oriented development, making communities memorable with parks/plazas/waterfront and gathering spaces, highlighted lessons learned, and described the role of brick in creating inviting places to the 120 architect and Urban Planner attendees. Urban Revitalization: One Brick at a Time
At this September 25, 2012 event, architects and planners learned ways in which urban revitalization can be done that is sympathetic to the surrounding neighborhoods. Examples of projects were shown that could be used as a guide for further exploration of this important topic. Harris Steinberg, FAIA, Founding Executive Director of PennPraxis and Daniel Kelley, FAIA, Senior Principal and Lead Designer provided the attendees with their vision for the present and future of urban revitalization. BIA Connects Architects to Genuine Clay Brick at AIA National Conference
Architects can connect with the latest in genuine clay brick products, design resources, technical resources and educational opportunities in the Brick Industry Association (BIA) exhibit at the AIA 2012 National Convention and Design Exposition, May 17-19. BIA will debut a new Brick in Architecture Multifamily edition focusing on the technical aspects and features of select buildings. Booth activities in spaces 4314 and 4316 will also include live, 3-D brick sculpting by Sue Landerman and a TV raffle.
Preparing for the Next Round of Growth
At this December 13, 2011 event, architects and community planners learned how communities are planning for smart growth and sustainability in the years to come. Mitchell Silver, Chief Planning Officer for the City of Raleigh and President of the American Planning Association; Harriet Tregoning, Director of the Office of Planning for Washington, D.C.; and Brendan Owens, Vice President for LEED Technical Development for the U.S. Green Building Council provided the 115 attendees with their vision for future and what they foresee the challenges and trends will be in the next round of growth. Harriet Tregoning’s and Brendan Owens’ presentations are available for those who were unable to attend.

Sustainability and Green Building Design
