The Baltimore/Washington Brick Distributor Council of the Brick Industry Association, along with the International Masonry Institute is pleased to present a hands-on event for architects. Come learn and experience the basics of the sustainable aspects of brick masonry at this three-hour event.

Brick: Sustainable Attributes and Environmental Advantages (2 hrs) - Brian E. Trimble, P.E., LEED AP, Brick Industry Association
Maria A. Viteri, AIA, LEED AP, International Masonry Institute
What are the environmental advantages of brick? How does the material fit within the LEED rating system and how many credits can brick help attain? This presentation includes discussions about brick manufacturing (including embodied energy), life cycle assessment, and performance aspects of brick as it relates to air barriers, insulation, recycled and reused materials, and energy efficient detailing. Also included are discussions on how the LEED rating system could be enhanced and the other features brick provides to sustainable buildings.

Hands-On Demonstration of Green Building Practices in Masonry Construction (1 hr) - Ed Bellucci, Kevin Hare and Mitch Fost, International Masonry Institute
This session will allow the attendee to get their hands dirty by applying what they just learned in the presentation to the field. Try your hand at masonry construction as master masons teach attendees the realities of the field. Through this hands-on demonstration, attendees will see how their sustainable design strategies and material selections affect construction. Come see first-hand what is possible with masonry construction. Please dress warmly and ready to work!
