The Role of Brick Paving Systems in Creating Streetscapes
Brandie Schaeffer LEEP AP, Brick Industry Association

From plazas to sidewalks and other pedestrian venues, this seminar will educate attendees about the function and benefits of brick paving systems. Learn why clay pavers are considered desirable by communities, how they fit in with the Complete Streets Act, and why the clay pavers' life cycle can be an economic benefit. The importance of proper installation and maintenance will also be covered. The seminar will end with a short discussion on the different aspects of brick in historic structures - such as shapes, arches, bond patterns, and jointing techniques - that will be seen later in the Walking Tour.

10:30 AM - Noon
Walking Tour Through Historic City of Alexandria
Tour Guides: Office of the City Architect and Board of Architectural Review

As we set out on foot through the streets of Alexandria, attendees will learn about the role and importance of clay brick in the development of the City as examples are highlighted by our guides. Topics to be covered include historic architecture and preservation, creating streetscapes, the importance of design, how design regulations impact development, and how new design can be sensitive to historic districts. Unique features in brick construction such as arches, shapes, bond patterns, and mortar will also be highlighted within the context of the city's architecture.
